We're Back!!

In 2006 we let the world know that the District of Columbia should have the right to field an Olympic team. We threw together a curling team and sought Olympic recognition. Our effort gained worldwide attention and shined a new spotlight on DC's lack on representation in Congress. You can see a new clip about our efforts by clicking here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rCYdvIWRG9M

Fast forward to 2008 -- we didn't receive any response from the International Olympic Committee. So now we're going at it again, only this time we're lacing up our sneakers and putting together a speed walking team. Why speed walking? It seemed like a sport Washingtonians are perfect for. Have you ever watched how quickly people walk in the city? If we can get people to put down the Blackberries and swing their arm, we're a shoe-in for the gold!

We need your help to take a stand for our rights and strike a blow for democracy in the District of Columbia.

Please take a minute, and use the form to the left to send a message to the International Olympic Committee. We need them to support our efforts to field an Olympic team for the District of Columbia. They've approved teams for the other territories of the United States, like Puerto Rico, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, why not DC?

Please support democracy. Take a minute now, and send a message to the IOC. Tell them to officially recognize us. Tell them to: LET DC PLAY!

Your Letter

Subject: Support an Olympic Team for the District of Columbia
Dear [Lawmaker]:

I am writing you today to urge you to support and officially authorize the efforts of the "DC Olympic Committee" to field Olympic teams for the District of Columbia (DC).

The people of DC have been denied the rights of full citizenship within their own nation. They have not been permitted to vote for members of Congress, and they have even been denied home rule and control over the affairs of their own city. In short, the people living in the District of Columbia have been treated as foreigners in their own country. Accordingly, I ask that the IOC do the same – and recognize the rights of DC citizens to form their own Olympic committee.

Sincerely,

Your name
Your street address
City, State Zip

(Note: This site is NOT connected with or officially recognized by the International Olympic Committee. Yeah, yeah, we know you know that since getting recognized is the whole point, right? But we still want to be 100% clear)
